Peace

Everyone wants peace in their lives. What does peace mean to you? No fighting, no war, no place to run to this evening? Internal peace can some times be effected by what is going on around us. Things we have no control over. Having a child with RAD can disrupt the peace in my house. He can stir up everyone with home he comes into contact.

Here are some things we do to keep peace in our house....sometimes it is to get peace in our house because we have let the uproar back in.

I believe peace in our hearts begins with a relationship with God. Reading the Word, praying, singing praise songs all bring me peace. Take time for your spiritual life.

Taking the kids for a walk, playing soft uplifting music, having a reading time, gentle back or shoulder rubs brings peace in the kid's behavior.

Sometimes no matter what we do other people may be yelling and disrupting. If I can keep myself regulated by 1)not taking it personally 2) Remembering the scared little boy in the monster suit 3) taking time for my own rejuvenation 4) think of what lies under the behavior-fear or sadness usually

"You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal."
Isaiah 26:3,4

Peace Out!

Peace! I hope today is the most peaceful day you've had in a long time! Yes. We can have peace in our hearts through our relationship with God. Deep inner peace amidst the storms. I have enjoyed reading your comments.

I do also believe there are many other ways God has given us to find peace. I am an avid believer in exercise. The stress relief is huge for me. We were designed so that our bodies release endorphins when we exercise. It is now one of the important parts of treatment for depression. I try to make sure my boys get some exercise each day too. I have them come out in the mornings to Mozart playing quietly. There is scientific evidence that it changes the way your brain works. It improves thinking and calms. I believe in time for quiet contemplation is important. I get up before the boys many times (not all) so I can have that quiet before they get up along with my cup of coffee. Fresh air and the outdoors are healing for me. I've always loved the outdoors. Long walks help me clear my thoughts and relax. I enjoy a massage about once a month. They actually help clear your body of toxins along with relaxing you. Spend time with emotionally healthy friends and family. VERY important. Ask yourself when you are with them how often RAD comes up. Our attachment therapist asked me that once after an outing with one of my girls. My goodness. It was coming up to much. There are other things in life. It does not define who we are.

I've been talking with my friend Bren about this very thing. Many of you do not know me outside of RAD. It is only a tiny part of my life. I focus on RAD here because there are so many who do not have support, education or maybe even are just wondering if this is what your child has. If that is you, there seem to be a wonderful group of moms gathering here. Feel free to ask question. One of them is bound to know and have dealt with it. I hope you find peace in your life today. Pray, go for a walk, put in that old Richard Simmon's video and trust, that you are going to be ok.

I'm reminded of Daniel and his buddies who were about to be thrown into the furnace of fire because they worshiped their God instead of the king. Here is what they said "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. " My child may or may not heal. I need to live is though he will. If he does not, God is still good. My life is still good. We go on.

No Peace/know peace

I think fear is what keeps us from having inner peace. When our kids start raging or acting out it brings up a lot of fear in us. We begin to have fear of failure, fear of living this way for years, fear for our child's future. We also have guilt. Guilt that we cannot do therapeutic parenting all the time and lose our tempers. Guilt when we say or do the wrong thing. Do things have to be perfect in our homes for us to have peace? I don't think so or no one would have peace. For today I am going to really think about what stands in between me when I don't feel the peace. Sometimes home can be a War Zone. I think the changes in school, weather, schedules really have a lot of our kids going. It is exhausting. I got up this morning and Bear's door alarm was shut off. I know it was on when I went to bed because I remember him starting to come out and it went off so he shut the door quickly. Then I checked to see if his medicine was taken this morning and all the Lexapro has been removed from the coming days sections. I had several minutes of screaming on his part about not believing him and he knows God is not very happy with me. yada yada yada. He denies he came out of his room. Denies taking the medication from the container. It was the end of the bottle so now he is OUT. Fear causes me to want to defend myself, to prove I'm right, to want to be in control. My husband was outside washing the van. I had bear sit out on the front steps while I went for coffee with a friend. He sat there in his pajamas since he was too busy screaming to get dressed. So my goal for today is to watch for the times when I am not feeling the peace, when I become disregulated and ask myself what my fear is....This post is all very reactive. Tomorrow I am going to think about proactive ways of seeking out peace. Put on your thinking caps. You're the most brilliant women I know!

Peace

We all love peace. I think it is so important that I'm going to think about it for a few days. First I need to think about what peace is. I guess there are different levels of peace. Sometimes, like now while everyone is asleep, my house is peaceful. When we are on vacation and I look at something majestic God has created I feel peace. When the kids are sitting doing homework and really focused on what they are doing, I feel peace. But then there is that deeper peace. I believe it comes from making peace with God. From living a life free from fear.....ah.... fear. There is that word again. Seems to come up often with a household with RAD in it....Maybe it is like one of those scales. I don't know what they are called.
The heavier the fear is in our hearts the less peace we can feel. We fear for our kids future. We fear for our future. We fear it is always going to be like it it at that moment. The Bible says "Perfect love casts out fear." God is the only one who has perfect love. I guess today I wanted to really think about what peace it is we want to feel exactly. What things are getting in our way? I think tomorrow I'll talk about ways to defeat the fear.
