Happy 17th Birthday!

Today is Bear and Fish's 17th birthday! It is all Bear has talked about for weeks. He is showing his emotional age. I actually like it when he does because it shows me where he is at. It is very tricky treating a 17 yo as though he were much younger. If he realizes what he is doing he is very offended. Anyway, we are off for a fun day and I'll post some pictures later!

So, are they twins?! Can you explain what you mean by how he is showing his emotional age? I don't understand how getting excited about his birthday is immaturity.

Jeannie,

Sure. Both boys are excited about their birthday. I just fixed them the lunch they chose, had ice cream cake and opened gifts. We will go see a movie as a family and they chose to go to Culver's for dinner. They do deserve to be excited about their birthdays.

What I mean about Bear is that for the last couple of months he is telling everyone, grocery store clerks, whoever, that his birthday is coming on June 27th. The sound of his voice when he says it is even very yougn. He has said repeatedly "I can't wait for my birthday." slways in this very small voice. He did ask for age apppropriate gifts which is good. Fish is his twin. His response is happy but 17 happy and not little boy happy. Children who have been through trauma are often stuck at the age in which the trauma occurs. Bear has been stuck at 6 for years. I do feel he is starting to move forward some though. I'm rambling.

I can see that about getting stuck at an emotional age . . . I think my daughter has made progress, but sometimes she still acts as though she is three . . . I am glad that Bear is excited about his birthday though, at least that is an innocent thing and a happy occasion.

Peggysue,

Good point. I think the boys had a good day. Taz had his moments. It is hard for him when the attention is on someone else but it really went pretty well....although we did see Transformers. If they took the action out there was approximatley 10 minutes of story. I much preferred The Proposal. But then it wasn't my birthday was it?! The boys loved it.

Ha! My DH just saw that movie, and I agree . . . most of the 'guy' films have very little to no storyline, I'll pass unless it is a special occasion!
